SIX NATIONS 2015: Predictions – Wales v England

walengflagNot long to go now.  We’re mere hours away from that annual ding-dong between two old rugby adversaries: Wales v England.  Much of the talk so far has been around English injuries, roof spats and the possible eccentricities of the French referee.  It’s pretty much all been said.  So how on earth can Red Rugby add something to this already fervent melting pot of anticipation?!  By staging our own Wales v England contest of course!!  We took two Welshmen and two Englishmen and asked them for their predictions for the opening match and the tournament at large.  The victors?  Time will tell.  [SPOILER ALERT] no one thinks a Grand Slam is on the cards.

THE WELSH CORNER

sonwoodyFlying the flag for Wales are Red Rugby contributors Shôn Douglas and Woodrow Hughes.  One supports Leicester Tigers, the other supports Gloucester but don’t let that deceive you!  Neither have placed England as championship contenders.  Both have, funnily enough, picked a certain side in red to lift the trophy.

Shôn: I’ve gone for a seven-point win tonight but I think we’re going to need a favour from England later in the tournament (much like England needed the French to do a job last year)!  I’m backing Stuart Lancaster’s lot to beat France on the final weekend, while Wales will get the points difference they need in Rome to pip the French to the title.  Everyone will lose at least one game, with France beating Ireland in Dublin and repeating the feat (narrowly) against Wales in Paris.  The Welsh will win both home games and see off the Scots and Italians who will be fighting for the wooden spoon in Round Three.

Woodrow: I’m going for two draws this year: France v Scotland and Wales v Ireland.  I agree that it will all come down to points difference, with Wales managing to put more on the Italians in Rome than the Irish can manage in the opening week.  England will lose both away matches but win all three at home (which sets them up nicely for the World Cup).  France, Scotland and Italy will scrap it out at the bottom half of the table, with the Italians coming a distant last.

Shôn’s final table:

W D L
WALES 4 0 1
FRANCE 4 0 1
ENGLAND 3 0 2
IRELAND 3 0 2
SCOTLAND 1 0 4
ITALY 0 0 5

Woody’s final table:

W D L
WALES 4 1 0
IRELAND 4 1 0
ENGLAND 3 0 2
SCOTLAND 1 1 3
FRANCE 1 1 3
ITALY 0 0 5

THE ENGLISH CORNER

simayesFor England, Harry and St.George step forward Simon Thomas and Andrew Mayes.  Both are football fans (Manchester United and Northampton Town respectively) so will be welcoming the distraction of the oval-shaped ball and the glorious old tournament that is the Six Nations.  England have managed three second-placed finishes in the last few years, but neither Simon or Andy can see history repeating for a fourth consecutive year.

Simon:  From my table you can see I’m feeling really optimistic about our chances this year!!  We’ve just got too many players missing and, even though its a World Cup year and we should be up for starting with a bang, I can’t see it happening.  It’s all about momentum, the Six Nations, and I think we’ll lose in Cardiff.  The Welsh team looks strong and settled.  Ours look’s anything but.  I’m backing a French win at Twickenham.  France, Wales and Ireland will contest for the title on the last weekend with Ireland getting it on points difference and winning back-to-back titles.

Andy: I haven’t predicted anything too unexpected or shocking to be honest.  Everyone expects England to lose in Cardiff, and I can’t argue against it.  Wales will sneak the title on points difference although I predict they will lose in Paris.  They’ll beat Ireland in Cardiff though.  England to win all the home games and France to win both of theirs and the away trip to Rome.  Scotland to avoid the wooden spoon via a win over the Azzurri in what promises to be a thriller! (sic)

Simon’s final table:

W D L
IRELAND 4 0 1
WALES 4 0 1
FRANCE 4 0 1
ENGLAND 2 0 3
SCOTLAND 1 0 4
ITALY 0 0 5

Andy’s final table:

W D L
WALES 4 0 1
IRELAND 4 0 1
ENGLAND 3 0 2
FRANCE 3 0 2
SCOTLAND 1 0 4
ITALY 0 0 5
